Medical & Care
At New Moston Primary School, we are committed to ensuring that children with medical conditions and additional health needs are supported safely, sensitively and consistently.
We recognise that every child’s needs are different. Some children may require ongoing support for a long-term medical condition, while others may need temporary arrangements following an illness, injury or operation.
Where additional support is required, we work closely with parents and carers, the child and, where appropriate, relevant healthcare professionals to ensure that suitable arrangements are in place.
Individual Health Care Plans
Some children with ongoing or more complex medical needs may require an Individual Health Care Plan.
This sets out important information about the child’s condition, the support they require in school, any medication or emergency procedures, and the responsibilities of those involved in their care.
Plans are developed in partnership with parents and carers and are reviewed when required.
Short-Term Health Needs
Children may occasionally require temporary support following an injury, illness or medical procedure.
Where appropriate, a Short-Term Health Care Plan may be put in place to record any temporary adjustments, restrictions or support needed to enable the child to attend school safely.
Reasonable Adjustments
We will consider reasonable adjustments where a medical condition or health need affects a child’s access to school life.
This may include changes to routines, access to rest or movement breaks, adaptations to activities, additional supervision or other appropriate support.
Medicines in School
Where a child needs medication during the school day, parents and carers should contact the school so that appropriate arrangements can be agreed.
Medication must be provided and administered in line with the school’s procedures.

Other Care Needs
Some children may also require more specific support, including arrangements relating to:
- allergies and anaphylaxis
- asthma
- intimate care
- mental health and emotional wellbeing
- emergency medication
- personal or complex care needs
Further information about these areas can be found within our Health, Care & Wellbeing section.
Keeping Us Informed
Parents and carers should let us know as soon as possible if their child:
- is diagnosed with a medical condition;
- starts or changes medication;
- requires additional support during the school day;
- has a significant change in their health needs; or
- requires temporary adjustments following illness or injury.
Good communication between home and school helps us ensure that children receive the right support at the right time.
